Photo Journal Review of the 2008 New York Comic Con 05/17/2008
Writer: Mark "Line" Cansino Did you miss the New York Comic Convention at the Jacob K Javitz center this year? With more than two web pages filled with descriptions, reviews and photos of the 2008 New York Comic Con, here's some of what you missed: Comic Illustrators, Creators and Writers: Artists Michael Fiffe and Partner in Crime Tim Hamilton for the comic Fall of Cthulhu. These two took turns drawing frames within this comic which I find to be pretty cool and trusting! Check out the pictures of these two crazy cats and their comic.
Celia Calle - One hip, cool, New York based illustrator - I bought a print of her work at the show. Her artwork will definitely catch your eye. In the photo to the left, you can see the print I bought and had signed by her. You can check out Celia Calle's web site by clicking here.
I got to talk with Creator/Producer/Editor Seth Hays and Writer Jose Torres for comic "Leviticus Cross". They came up with a comic about a girl with unworldly powers that is treated like an outcast - like witches were back in the day in Salem witch trials. The comic art is pretty sweet - great coloring and I love comics where the ink is left out - with pencil art untouched. For more details on these fellahs and their comic, check out: www.LeviticusCross.com Cover of Leviticus Cross #1. Definitely a comic I'll be picking up. I believe there's only 5-6 issues in the whole series - so get it while it's available now!
Ed Mouzon & Ray Felix - Ray, a comic artist & writer from the Bronx that's drawn for comics "Bronx Heroes" and "A World Without Superheroes". I did some googling on this guy because he seemed pretty cool. I found out he was teaching some workshop for kids at the NYC kids comic con in 2008. You can check out the comic studio for "Bronx Heroes" at CupOJavaStudio.net. BTW word to the wise, Ed is cool and gave me lots of cool posters. Thanks Ed!
John Gallagher - creator, writer and artist of "Buzz Boy"! John was another cool artist I got to speak to. Buzz Boy was a comic of his that first started off as an idea for a animated tv show pilot which unfortunately did not get taken on and he decided - with such a cool new character - Let's make it into a comic. So he did! You can learn more about John Gallagher and Buzz Boy at SkyDogComics.com
Buzz Boy Number 1 Signed By John Gallagher to me! Woot!
U.A. Morrison - This guy was really interesting. I spotted him up on his chair shouting out about how he's an independent comic artist, publishing, writing and illustrating his own comic "Roadkill" and how he put his blood, sweat and tears into it. See him standing proudly next to his poster! U.A. filled me in with what the letters in his name mean - Uncle Al - from where he comes from. Check out more about Uncle Al and Roadkill at www.Roadkill2000.com Matt Bower - Matt drew a comic I got to check out called Rapid City B-Sides with writer Josh Dahl. You can learn more about them and Rapid City at http://www.monolithllc.com/
Jeff Clemens - I spotted Jeff Clemens debuting his comic "Obsession" with writer William Rees.
Photo of the "Obsession" comic.
Video Games: Sid Meier. I got to meet Video Game Designer Sid Meier. How cool is that? I thought he was a fictional name of some guy that lived through these "Civilzation" times. LOL. I was standing on line for what I thought was the artist of some poster design for one of his latest games. Who knew I'd actually meet him at the comic con! See the photo I took of him and the poster he signed for me!
Found a new comic artist I really like and have added to my list of favorites, James Callahan. I spotted his artwork in this comic on display called "Strange Detective Tales". You can learn more about the comic and view the pages inside at http://www.oddgodpress.com/
Comic, Games, Modern Pop Culture news web sites and pod casts: Down one aisle in the comic con were a set of booths dedicated to those who write and speak the news following the topics mentioned. I'm glad to see these guys. You could almost say - "Without them there'd be know comics" because they help keep us up to date with what's new and what's coming soon. Here's a few of their names linked to their sites: Indie Spinner Rack Birds Of Geek Comic Geek Speak Comic News Insider The Pop Cult Online Comic Timing Ninja Consultant All Things Fun! Raging Bullets Variant Edition Wow! So much content I had to put the rest on a page 2! Click here for more photos, reviews and descriptions of the 2008 New York Comic Con!
