Movies : Review of Stay Alive 07/20/2006
Writer: Line

Stay Alive DVD Box Unrated Directors CutStay Alive was a great attempt at combining a survival game with a horror movie. Before it's release I was very psyched with anticipation. The creators came very VERY close to hitting it on the head. The direction was well done, and with a few tweeks and some changed shots it would have been perfect.

I feel if this movie was made for an R audience, it may have done better. I was looking for more gore (not that a good movie needs it, but this is supposed to be survival horror right?) And if it were in the R rating category, I think the effects that were put on screen would have been more effective in scaring/frightening the audience as opposed to just having the actors act in fright with no vision of what it is they're afraid of. If the creators were afraid that the public would not go to see it if it were R Rated, All I can say is, take a look at the success of the Grand Theft Auto series, made for mature adults but somehow EVERYONE has played it. The tickets will sell!

The acting was pretty good and I had a great appreciation of the writing & dialogue in this movie. The knowledge of a gamer's life in our current time was brilliant. There were some "cool" items to be seen in the film like alienware computers, the poster for Steamboy for example. Hearing some of the slang the characters had said was pretty funny as well and really caught the target audience, passionate gamers.

While watching the film and noticing the "somewhat-bad" parts, I always kept this feeling of "Wow, they really did a great job, and that was a great attempt". I had felt sorry for the creators of the movie because the crowd in my theater mocked the faults aloud, but I also felt good that this movie was ALMOST the way it should be done. Almost as if I was a friend of the people that made it.

I was immersed in the story and I was infatuated by the movie overall. I wanted to know about all the characters, I wanted to watch the movie a second time just in case I missed something. I even stayed past the credits to see if there would be an extra "ending". I guess the best way to describe my enjoyment of this film was that I'm already anticipating seeing a part 2.

Stay Alive, I ask, "When will we see a Stay Alive II?"

I am biased in this review as I am a passionate gamer and am looking to create games myself. So if you're like me in that respect, you will really enjoy this film.

If you're looking for a scary film but are not into games, this movie may fall short at times but still worth seeing as it's almost setting the bar for a new category of movie type.

I feel this movie could also bridge out to other venues to continue the storyline, a'la an actual MMORPG Survival horror game or perhaps mini web video adventures for people to get prepared for a part ii or a game.
